As a child I can vividly remember the smell, the sounds, & the heat coming off of my grandmothers stove when she would fry chicken (drumsticks) on Sunday afternoons. I remember thinking “What a feast!” the table would be overflowing with macaroni and cheese, buttered biscuits or fried cornbread (depending on her mood), sliced tomatoes, mashed potatoes, buttered corn, and fresh halfrunners. (green beans)
Her matching army/retro green fridge and oven with all the little knick knacks on the top ledge of the stove & four or five different sets of salt and pepper shakers are crystal clear in my mind today nearly 15 years after her passing. It is amazing how certain memories stay in our minds forever and others are so quickly forgotton. For fun I asked several friends what food or dish takes them back to childhood..and the results range from seven layer chocolate cakes to soup beans and cornbread.
